Chateau Correnson (Lirac, Tavel)

  • History, Geography

Founded by Jean Peyre in the 1940s, and orginally called Domaine Peyre, the estate is now run by Jean's son Mark, and his grandson, Vincent.  Vincent was educated at the Univeristy in Bordeaux and is the Domaine's cellar master.

The property is located in St Genies de Comolas across the Rhone from from Chateauneuf-du-Pape and has vineyards in AOC Lirac, Cotes du Rhone and Tavel.

  • Vineyards, Vinification, Wines

The vineyards in AOC Lirac are sandy, chalky and covered with rolled pebbles.

Chateau Correnson makes two cuvees of Lirac Red - "Vinolentia" and "Divinitas."  The Vinolentia is made of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre.  Annual production is 50,000 bottles.  The Divinitas is made of 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache noir, and 10% Mourvedre.  Annual production is 15,000 bottles.

The grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand.  Vinification is traditional with a maceration from 18 -21 days, after which the wine is aged for 8 months (Vinolentia) or 12 months (Divinitas), 50% in oak barrels and 50% in tanks.

  • Winemaker's Tasting Note - Lirac Vinolentia

"The wine is characterized by a lovely deep purple and even color.  It has an intense and complex nose, marked by aromas of black and red fruits.  The finish is extremely long.  This wine is best served at 18-19 [degrees] C and pairs well with red meats, grilled or in sauce, and cheese."  The Vinolentia can be enjoyed now but will drink well for a period of 8 - 10 years.

  • Awards / Ratings:

The Vinolentia 2006 Red received two stars and a "Coup de Coeur" in the Guide Hachette des Vins 2009.
