Chateau La Sergue (Lalande de Pomerol)

  • History and Geography

Chateau La Sergue is one of the outstanding cuvees produced by renowned Bordeaux oenologist Pascal Chatonnet and is part of the Vignobles Chatonnet founded by his parents Janine and Andre Chatonnet who purchased the property Haut Chaigneau in 1967.

The property is situated within the commune of Neac on the ancient pilgrim road to St Jacques de Compostelle in Lalande de Pomerol.  The entire estate consists of 27 hectares in Lalande de Pomerol (five of which are used to produce Chateau La Sergue) and 1.5 hectares in St Emilion.

  • The Vineyard and Vinification

La Sergue is produced from vineyard plots located on the oldest terraces in the Libourne region on the Pomerol and Neac plateau.  The soil consists of a silicious clay with sandstone and clay gravel.
The average age of the vines is 40 years.  The grape varieties are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.  The yield is about 35 hectoliters per hectare.
Grapes from each plot are separately fermented using state of the art technology but traditional Bordeaux methods.  The wine is aged 14-16 months in new oak barrels.
Total production is approximately 1125 cases.
  • Pascal Chatonnet Tasting Notes / La Sergue 2005

Deep almost black color with purplish-red highlights.  The nose displays sloe, raspberry, jam, blackberry, jelly and just the right touch of toasty oak, as well as exotic overtones of coconut and clove.  Extremely elegant.  Rich, ripe tannin on the palate.  Bursting with flavor overlaying fresh tannins without excess acidity.  Hints of stewed red fruit develop into warmer, toastier taste of bread crust and Havana cigar.  A concentrated, complex wine.  Opens up beautifully with aeration and obviously has huge aging potential.

Las Passion du Vin - 90-92:  "Subtle bouquet of black fruit with a hint of cocoa.   Quite suave and well-focused on the palate with good balance and a healthy tension.  Lovely mouth feel and fairly long aftertaste.  Very understated oak."
