Chateau de la Font du Loup (Chateauneuf-du-Pape)

  • History and Geography

Situated in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC in the Provencal village of Courthézon between Avignon and Orange, this is a family estate which dates back to the time of Napoleon.
The name Font du Loup or “fountain of the wolves” refers to the name of a spring now situated at the heart of the domain.  Legend has it that the wolves of the Mont Ventoux came to drink from this spring when they were going down to the plains of Provence.
The Font du Loup vineyard consists of 20 hectares in a single parcel of land looking out over the Vaucluse Hills, Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail.
  • The Vineyard

The surface consists primarily of stones, polished and worn by time, and sand, rich with alluvial sediments.  The sub-layer consists of sand, clay and limestone.  The stones absorb the daytime heat and release it during the night.

The average age of the vines is 45 years, with the oldest vines ranging from 80 to 100 years.

The Château de la Font du Loup Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made from Grenache (planted in the stony part of the vineyard), Syrah (planted on a sandy terrace beneath the Château) and Mourvèdre.

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Puy Rolland is made entirely of 100% Grenache old vines.

The average yield of the vines ranges from 25 – 32 hectoliters per hectare.
